This differs both from new-build roof construction, which is about building an entirely new load-bearing structure - the rafters - for a new building, and from covering replacement, which only touches the outer layer on top of an existing, technically sound structure.
In practice, most of our clients here are homeowners carrying out a significant renovation who want the roof system built correctly through every layer - not just a new covering laid over an aged or incomplete structure underneath. Regardless of covering material, the ventilation gap between counter-battens and battens is a technical necessity, not an optional extra - it's the only way to remove moisture that gets into or forms within the structure before it damages the timber or insulation.
